I wrote here last week applauding Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber about instituting a deadline on the this fiasco and really that’s what it become since I’ve now read that AC Milan is continuing talks with the Los Angeles Galaxy on making David Beckham’s move to the Italian club permanent. What happened to the deadline Major League Soccer gave the Italian giants? If AC Milan was so interested in David Beckham then they would have upped their total on Friday, perhaps they knew that MLS would buckle and they could string this out.

Well I for one can say I’m tired of this whole fiasco and I wonder, would MLS do this with any other player that they currently own? I doubt it, but for some reason they feel that their expensive project player who hasn’t lived up to their expectations should get special treatment. It’s time for MLS to get tough and end all negotiations and force Beckham back to the league and make him play this season, and yes you can look up my past articles where I wanted to end the Beckham Experiment, but I think now that the deadline has passed, the league should make the player own up to his contract.

Well now the so called new deadline deal could be finalized this Friday, but until all papers are signed I’m not too optimistic anything will be complete until March 9th when the loan deal expires. I’d like to hear your thoughts on this issue, should MLS get tough and end all talks or will they continue to be the younger brother that gets pushed around and let AC Milan control the negotiations on their terms?

The LA Galaxy and AC Milan have until Friday to work out an agreement to see where David Beckham will play for after the March transfer date. With the start of the MLS season coming quickly it will be nice to have this finally come to an end so it won’t distract the Galaxy as they get set for their season, a season they will want to improve on and make the playoffs this year. Beckham’s contract allows him to leave the Galaxy after the ’09 season, and anyone reading his quotes over the last month know his heart is in Italy so if the Italian giants can offer a deal in excess of $10 million then the league should accept that and carry on or they will get zero when he does ultimately walk after the ’09 season. I for one applaud commissioner Don Garber in wanting to get this resolved as quickly as possible, it’s about time Major League Soccer sets the deadline and it let’s other clubs around the league that they won’t be played like a fiddle.

So what are your thoughts, will AC Milan up their offer and keep Beckham? Will they let him go back to the LA Galaxy and wait until the 2009 season when Beckham can walk out on his MLS deal and re-sign him then?

Let’s face it, the great David Beckham experience was pretty much a flop. Now don’t get me wrong, he did provide great some great moments, there were a lot of LA Galaxy jerseys sold, there was a peak of some non soccer interest in the league for a bit, but the overall experience wasn’t fully met. US soccer fans and more importantly, LA Galaxy fans were hoping that when Beckham came he would turn around the Galaxy and make them a playoff team, but adding one good player to a bad team wasn’t going to do that and when you are working with a strict salary cap, two good players just won’t cut it in a league that has a lot of parity.

I firmly believe Beckham’s main interest in coming to Major League Soccer was to chase the almighty dollar and grow his personal advertising to benefit himself, anything more than that like getting the Galaxy to the playoffs would be a bonus. Now that his personal soccer career has improved far from what he thought it would be at this time, he now acknowledges he needs to stay at AC Milan so that he can still be under consideration for the English national team for World Cup 2010 qualifiers, this wasn’t the story about two years ago. Remember he turned down a deal with Real Madrid where he was sitting on the bench because he wasn’t the player he used to be, so coming to Major League Soccer was to be his swansong where he would end his career.

Remember this quote by Becks when the deal was announced that he was coming to America, “”I’ve played now for two of the biggest clubs in the world and played at the highest level for 15 years, and now I think that I need another challenge,” he said. Well it seems like he needs another change and that’s to stay in Italy. Major League Soccer would be doing themselves a disservice if they turned down a deal by AC Milan, now I’m not saying to take $10 or $12 million for the transfer fee, but if they do get a great offer they should take it and use it for other players to better their league.

By having to make room for Beckham and Landon Donovan, the Galaxy in fact hurt themselves in the long run since they weren’t able to get other good players to fill out their roster and make them a playoff team like they used to be a few years go. The soap opera needs to stop and one player certainly won’t make or break the league as the league’s play has been better over the last few years and attendance in some markets has increased and not to mention the new Seattle franchise has already started off on the right foot by announcing that they will be profitable in their first year.
